Master’s Program in Educational Assessment and Research Methodology

This program prepares graduate students for positions as assessment specialists, testing and evaluation experts, and research methodologists, as well as for future doctoral studies in the fields of standard-based assessment and evidence-based research.

Core Courses

Course Title

Course Description

Educational Measurement and Assessment

This course is designed to provide graduate students with an introduction to the basic principles of educational measurement and assessment with emphasis upon test construction in accord with instructional objectives. Consideration is given to the statistical principles of validity and reliability, and the variety, selection and use of standardized assessments for K-12 students. Methods of assigning grades to students will also be explored.

Educational Assessment and Research Literacy

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to research principles, processes and practices applicable to the field of education. Students will develop the ability to read and evaluate educational research by analyzing the literature used by educational researchers. This course will teach students the basics of research methods and develop their practical strategies in conducting educational research studies. In addition, the course also focuses on training students' understanding of the needs for sustainable professional development.

Quantitative Research Methods (I)

This course is designed to teach graduate students elementary quantitative research methods in education. Students will learn to use SPSS for elementary quantitative analysis and to interpret the results accurately. This course will develop students' ability to evaluate elementary quantitative research designs and data analyses. In addition, the course also focuses on training students' understanding of the needs for sustainable professional development.

Educational Measurement Theories

This course is designed to provide graduate students with a deep understanding of the three measurement theories, i.e., classical test theory, item response theory, and generalizability theory. The fundamental assumptions, central concepts, and applications of each theory are introduced. This course aims at developing students’ competences and skills in using these theories in educational research and practices. Strengths and weaknesses of each theory will also be discussed.

Quantitative Research Methods (II)

This course is designed to teach graduate students intermediate and advanced quantitative research methods in education. Students will learn to use SPSS for intermediate and advanced quantitative analysis and to interpret the results accurately. This course will develop students' ability to evaluate intermediate and advanced quantitative research designs and data analyses. In addition, the course also focuses on training students' understanding of the needs for sustainable professional development.

Qualitative Research Methods

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to qualitative research methods in education. Students will learn the following qualitative research methods: interviews, focus group interviews, action research, grounded theory design, narrative research, and ethnographic research designs. They will also learn to analyze, interpret qualitative data and report qualitative research results. This course will also develop students' ability to evaluate qualitative research designs and data analysis. In addition, the course also focuses on training students' understanding of the needs for sustainable professional development.

Research on Educational Measurement Tools

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to the construction and validation of quantitative educational research measuring tools. Students will learn to construct tests and Likert scale measuring instruments within the frameworks of classical test theory and modern measurement theories. They will also learn to use quantitative (such as factor analysis) and qualitative methods to validate measurement tools. This course will also develop students' ability to evaluate measurement tools used in empirical research studies. In addition, the course also focuses on training students' understanding of the needs for sustainable professional development.

Scholarly Training on Educational Assessment and Research Methodology

This course is designed to introduce graduate students to the writing and publication of academic papers in the field of education. Students will learn to design and conduct a research study, and finally write a research article for publication. Topics covered in this course include choosing a research topic, review the literature, the selection of research methods, the construction of measuring tool(s), data collection procedures, data analysis methods, research article writing, submission to a scholarly journal, responding to the reviewers’ comments and revising the submission. Students will also learn how to write each section of a research paper, the APA format, and the selection criteria of SSCI journals. This course will also develop students' comprehensive ability to evaluate all aspects of an empirical research article. In addition, the course also focuses on training students' understanding of the needs for sustainable professional development.

Postdoctoral Program

The postdoctoral program is a two-year program designed for overseas candidates who hold a doctoral degree in social sciences including education, management, health, and leadership and policy. The candidates will receive training in standard-based assessment and research methodologies, and conduct evidence-based research studies under the supervision of Dr. Jinyan Huang, Professor and Director of the ERCEA.

The postdoctoral program focuses on standard-based assessment and evidence-based research as applied to the contexts of education, management, psychology, health, leadership and policy, and social sciences. The program emphasizes diverse perspectives in these core areas:

Standard-based Assessment — classroom assessment, construction and validation of measurement tools, construction and use of standardized tests, cross-cultural assessment, curriculum evaluation, program evaluation, generalizability theory, item response theory, and cognitive diagnostic assessment

Evidence-based Research Methodology — research and statistics, univariate statistics, multivariate statistics, factor analysis, structural equation modeling, hierarchical linear modeling, meta-analysis, geographical information system and data visualization, qualitative approaches

The postdoctoral program prepares postdoctoral researchers for positions as assessment specialists, testing and evaluation experts, research methodological specialists, research scientists, and university faculty.
