Evidence-based Research Center for Education Assessment to hold Brown Bag Session on Research Topics, Questions, and Research Methods

At noon on September 29, the Evidence-based Research Center for Education Assessment (ERCEA) held a regular online seminar. The seminar was chaired by Professor Huang Jinyan and attended by Dr. Li Zhang and seven graduate students from the Research Center.

The central focus of the brown bag session revolved around the theme of "Research Topics, Research Questions, and Research Methods." Initially, Professor Huang provided an elucidation of the research procedure and outlined the requisite steps to be followed when composing a research report. Additionally, Professor Huang discussed identifying a research topic, formulating a research question, and selecting an appropriate research methodology. The selection of research topics should exhibit specificity, avoiding excessive breadth while emphasizing the study challenges and research techniques inherent in the chosen themes. The alignment between research objectives and research topics should be of utmost importance. For research questions to be deemed effective, they should include several key attributes, including conciseness, interest, specificity, and controllability. Research methodologies often encompass qualitative, quantitative, and hybrid research approaches. The selection of a suitable research method should be based on the inherent characteristics of our research. Professor Huang emphasized the importance of employing suitable interview techniques tailored to the specific characteristics of distinct subject groups during the interview process. Interviewers must possess a proficient command of specific interview skills to extract comprehensive information beneficial to subsequent studies effectively. The interconnection between research subjects, research questions, and research methodologies is integral to the entirety of the research process. These three crucial aspects necessitate clarification in the realm of scientific research.

In conclusion, the participants engaged in an examination and discourse of a scholarly article on peer evaluation authored by Professor Huang Jinyan, which was recently disseminated in an international scholarly publication.
